South African MV Scrapyard finds

Hi gents,

In my search for Saracens and Saracen spares, I came across the MV's, some I am familiar with and others I don't even have a clue or that they even existed. I have taken photos and will post them as we go. I will revisit these scrap yards, so if you want to know anything, shoot, I'll ask.

I will kick-off with the familiar (to me) MV's. It just seems that uploading is very slow tonight.

It looks like Ford Flat head V8's that were utilized in these vehicles, I was told of German origin, does not make sense, though.

Monty, these are WW2 South African built Reconaissance Cars, more commonly know as "Marmon Herrington Armoured Cars". The Mk's I, II, III and IV used Ford automotive components plus a Marmon-Herrington All Wheel Drive conversion (driven front axle plus transfer box). From the Mark IVF onwards the automotive components were supplied by Ford Canada. The armoured hulls were desigend and manufactured in South Africa. Definitely worthy of saving!

Monty, can you kill me :nut: :shocked: Thats mad. Too many usefull parts, but so far. :-( What the sealed cab on the racks. Looks like to me as Austin or Bedford.

 

I need the bulbs holders from old tipe Smiths speedometers what was fitted in ww2 lorries.

Hi guys,

 

There is enough spares there to make one cry! When I visited the place, the owner was overseas with a batch of MV's/ Spares to some museum. He does sell, mostly to overseas clients as apparantly according to him, there is legislation preventing south African public ownership of MV's.

I will find out more from him, I will just make an appointment to ensure he will be present.

 

Radek, Oily is looking for seats, rog8811 wants to know more about those bonnetted Israelly trucks, I need Saracen reduction hub spares, I will enquire about those bulb holders for you. The sealed cabs on the racks are for early Magirus Deutz trucks, I forget the name. (I am platinum blonde after all these years!)

 

Handler 69, here are/were supposed to be 280 Saracens, bought by the South African Army in the '50's.I have seen evidence of three that has been butchered with cutting torches, so most of the others should be around. All of these are of the "Saracen 88" variety, so very scarce in your part of the world. Check out post 77 and on under the British Vehicle threads, Saracen build-up!

 

I do not know of any Saladins but have also been wrong about the Scammells. Somebody I spoke to said that here are supposed to be two Scammells, he even named their units where they were stationed. Apparantly spares were getting to be a problem, it must have been during the Isolation years. Andy, I am tickled pink by this vehicle but have no funds to purchase. Maybe I should consider selling the Cobra! My wife will kill me if I bring another "piece of Junk" home!!

 

I still need to post the Dodge pictures. I am astounded by the fact that one man could have collected so many MV's and such a great variety of Dodge trucks! There is also another artilliary piece there, it looked like anti-aircraft gun, but in my anciety, I failed to take a picture!

Although that may not be her idea of a safari.
